Nintendojo journey to Nnooo (part 2 of 3)

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

This is the second part of the article Evan Campbell posted on Ninendojo about his visit to Nnooo. You can read the full article here.

Seeing video game consoles stacked next to work desks indicates a strong love for gaming, even if the system revolves around research. Nic Watt, CEO and creative director of Nnooo Studios, just used his Nintendo 64 to check out the polygon count on character models since the system specs parallel Nintendo DS and DSi.

The latter handheld serves as a home to most of Nnooo’s releases — from Pop Plus Solo to myNotebook and the recently-released my Postcards. It is no wonder why Watt continues to explore the hardware, specifically in regard to DSi. He wants “to make sure that [Nnooo Studios is] exploring the best features of the particular platform and making the best use of them because [he] thinks people buy a DSi because of the features that it offers…” (more…)

Nintendojo journey to Nnooo (part 1 of 3)

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Evan Campbell popped over to visit us while he was based in Sydney. The following is his first post about his visit. You can read the full article at Nintendojo here.

Journey To Nnooo Studios

The views and opinions expressed herein do not necessarily state or reflect those of Nintendojo as a whole or any of its affiliates.

Location: Downtown Sydney.

I jump off one ferry and briskly walk toward another boat on the wharf. Skyscrapers line the horizon to my left while the soothing water of the Tasman Sea sits to my right.

I hop on the Balmain East ferry a minute or so before the boat’s planned departure. I ask a woman fitted in a Sydney Ferries polo if this is the right boat to jump on, and she grunts in an approving manner.

Once on the ship, I choose to plop down on a red cushioned seat with no one else in the aisle. A woman behind me continues to make crackling noises with a brown sack lunch that irritates the headache I’ve been fighting off. But no matter, I’m more focused on the journey ahead and can’t wait to sit down with Nic Watt, creative director and CEO of Nnooo Studios. (more…)

An interview with ARN: Nic Watt on Nintendo, R18+ classifications and gaming software

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

Yesterday I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Matthew Sainsbury for ARN website. Below is the full interview which you can also read on their site.

Nic Watt, founder and creative director of games and application software developer, Nnooo, is on the cutting edge of the industry. The Independent Software Developer’s sales model is entirely around digital downloads for the iPhone, Nintendo Wii and DS. He speaks to MATTHEW SAINSBURY about the future of digital distribution and the broader gaming software industry.

Can you give me an overview of Nnooo and your background?

I’ve been in the industry for about 10 years now. I was working at Electronic Arts in London, and my partner got offered the chance to come to Australia, so we made the decision to move out here. It was at that point I sold some property I had in the UK, and decided to make the jump to running my own small games company.

It was around about the time that the small downloadable titles were starting to come to market. Microsoft had just launched Xbox Live Arcade, and I thought the future of these small downloadable games was quite exciting. Particularly from a small company point of view, it was something we could achieve.

What are the advantages of downloadable titles over a full retail release?

For us, the one thing I wanted to do was to make the games I wanted to make. When you work with a really big company, such as EA, that becomes very difficult, because you’ve got to go through so many different stages and there’s so many approval mechanisms. Quite often, the people higher up in the company have their own vision for the kinds of games they want to have made.

Also, the hard part of making a full retail game is it costs a lot of money – when you start up a new company, it’s very difficult industry for people to give you $5, $10 or $20 million to make a videogame unless you’ve done something like make a Halo or World or Warcraft in the past. (more…)
