DSiWare: myPostcards Preview

Finding the right ingredients for a successful game on DSiWare seems rather difficult, especially for a third-party developer. Yet Nnooo Studios believes that stirring together the unlikely pair of post cards and video games with myPostcards may become the next best combo after peanut butter and jelly.

The DSiWare title allows people to take pictures with their DSi and then create a postcard with various backgrounds, hand writing and even digital stamps. When finished, the player downloads the finished product to the DSi Camera, which allows them to upload the image to Facebook, e-mail the card or even print the picture out to send via snail mail.

Nic Watt, Nnooo CEO and creative director, explains that the concept originated from his earlier years when he would send postcards to friends and family while on vacation. “With myPostcards, we thought that there’s this cool camera in the device and people are using it to take photographs. But there’s something that I use to do as a kid on holiday that I just don’t do anymore, and that’s send your friends and family postcards.

“So I thought ‘Is there a way to revitalize that and use modern technology, but still give you something that’s really cool?’”

A slick and elegant interface punctuates the experience and makes use of DSi’s technology, with easy-to-understand touch-screen buttons easing players along the way. In a matter of seconds, people will be taking a photograph and writing with their stylus to develop a custom postcard. Relaxing music layers icing on the cake to round out the visual and audio presentation.

Nnooo also throws a few carrots into the software to keep people coming back for more. Using the title again and again unlocks new background designs and stamps, giving people a reason to create more postcards. In addition, the application cleverly pulls data from other Nnooo products on the handheld, so if someone owns Pop Plus Solo, a special design will be awaiting the user. This attention to detail really showcases the care instilled in the product.

Hopefully, the player will not be the only one to witness the care and thought put into the title. According to Watt, creating the postcard is only half the fun. “If you receive a postcard from someone, it’s such a nice feeling that they thought about you,” Watt said.

Nnooo is banking on that good feeling to touch everyone who downloads my Postcards. The game is scheduled to be released in April.
