Resistance: Fall of Man
Got a this with my PS3 at Christmas. I know its like 5 months later but World of Warcraft and work have been eating up a lot of my time so its been hard to write!
Premise
Its the Second World War but in a parallel universe. There are no nazis, instead a mutant/alien plague has escaped Russia and spread across Europe to the UK. You and some American Allies must fight of this scourge and save the world. Nice graphical showcase for the PS3 and an interesting plot line (well instead of the usual WWII fps shlock).
Controls
The game is a first person shooter and so uses the usual: left stick for move and strafe and the right for turn and look. Strangely the triggers are not used for weapons by default (although this can be configured). At certain points you have to shake the control to get rid of bad guys who attach themselves to you.
Setting
As mentioned the game is set in the UK at about the same time as WWII but in a parallel universe. It’s nice to see a game set in the UK and although it does give the impression of this very well there are not a staggering amount of landmarks which you can link back to the UK and nor would anyone from Manchester, London etal be able to identify the games cities with their own. The cut-scenes are well voiced by someone who for once actually sounds English instead of a bad impersonation. As such you buy into whole ambience and parallel universe stuff pretty quickly.
The graphics, lighting etc are really nice. Not startling or breathtaking but not bland or boring either. If its your first PS3 game then you will feel rewarded for your money spent but I am sure better things graphically will appear on PS3 sooner rather than later.
Gameplay
Resistance FOM is a pretty straight forward FPS and offers nothing radically new to the genre. It does include, the surely mandatory co-op mode and online modes as well as a large staple of weapons. Although many of the neat weapons are only opened on a second play through. Each weapon, if I remember correctly, has a second function and all are entertaining and pretty unique to Resistance FOM. Unfortunately the uniqueness of the weapons is not really fleshed out or used in a manner which makes the game that much different from a traditional FPS.
Conclusion
Resistance FOM is a fun game which I really enjoyed playing. It’s nothing unique nor groundbreaking but it is very well executed and entertaining.
