Interview with Nnooo’s Nic Watt

We take a moment to chat with the makers of myNotebook about making games in Australia and their upcoming RPG, ‘Spirit Hunters Inc.’ for DSiWare.
Nnooo is a growing development studio based in Sydney who have produced some of the most successful software apps on the DSiWare store. The four-strong team have managed to pump out several versions of their myNotebook apps for DSiWare; the bubble-bursting game Pop for DSiWare and WiiWare; and are looking to build on their game-making chops with their ghost-catching RPG game, Spirit Hunters Inc.

I was lucky to see an early build of Spirit Hunters Inc. earlier this year- a game that utilises the DSi’s camera to enable players to hunt down, fight and collect hidden spirits in the world around them. The project will be Nnooo’s most ambitious game to date and highlights the creative talent we have here at home in Australia. Seeing the potential in Spirit Hunters Inc., as well as the growing library of myLifeCollected software on the DSi, I tracked down Nnooo’s creative director Nic Watt to talk about what it was like to develop games in Australia and asked him to shed some light on Spirit Hunters. Nnooo announces the following release dates for myNotebook: Tan on Nintendo’s DSiWare:

Europe/Australia/New Zealand – Friday 10 September
Americas: Monday September 13

myNotebook: Tan will be priced at 500 points in all regions.

Nnooo is a small independent games development studio based in Sydney Australia. We fund, develop and publish our own games and applications which are predominantly made for the Nintendo Wii and DSi platforms through WiiWare and DSiWare channels. Our titles include Pop/Pop+ Solo, the myLifeCollected series and the upcoming Spirit Hunters Inc.

Our success to date, combined with a strong current pipeline and a desire to extend our products to other platforms (including Nintendo’s new 3DS), has opened up a permanent position for an experienced software engineer. This is an opportunity for a passionate and committed games developer to join a small, professional and friendly team who make their own games and own decisions. PRESS RELEASE: Nnooo announces the launch date of myNotebook: Carbon™ for Nintendo DSiWare™ in the Americas.

myNotebook: Carbon™, the latest release in the highly popular myNotebook™ series, will launch in the Americas on Monday August 16. This version allows the user to save 128 pages, export their notes to their Nintendo DSi Photo Album and unlock brand new page types. It also features new icons to indicate the time and current battery level.

“We are excited to be able to respond to user feedback” said Nnooo’s Creative Director, Nic Watt. “People love using their notebooks so much, they quickly run out of pages. A lot of the feedback we had was to not only increase the page count but also allow users to be able to export their pages. We decided that the best way to do this was to release new versions with more pages and these additional features.”

myNotebook: Carbon is expected to be launched in Europe, Australia and New Zealand later this month. An additional two new colours, myNotebook: Pearl™ and myNotebook: Tan™, are expected to be released during August and September, with the same new features as myNotebook: Carbon. These new versions are in addition to the original three myNotebook colours – blue, green and red – launched at the end of last year.

“Soon we will have a suite of six myNotebook colours to choose from”, said Watt, “giving users plenty of choice and a chance to build a myNotebook™ library!”

The myNotebook range is part of Nnooo’s myLifeCollected™ series, which also includes myPostcards™ and the soon to be released myDiary™. myDiary will allow users to organise their lives by keeping track of appointments, making daily journal entries and even setting daily alarms.

myNotebook: Carbon will cost 500 points and be available from Monday August 16 in the Americas.

Seeing video game consoles stacked next to work desks indicates a strong love for gaming, even if the system revolves around research. Nic Watt, CEO and creative director of Nnooo Studios, just used his Nintendo 64 to check out the polygon count on character models since the system specs parallel Nintendo DS and DSi.

The latter handheld serves as a home to most of Nnooo’s releases — from Pop Plus Solo to myNotebook and the recently-released my Postcards. It is no wonder why Watt continues to explore the hardware, specifically in regard to DSi. He wants “to make sure that [Nnooo Studios is] exploring the best features of the particular platform and making the best use of them because [he] thinks people buy a DSi because of the features that it offers…” Read the rest of this entry »
