Developers Cubed: Nnooo

by Alex Kidman

Gizmodo’s Developers Cubed series offers a behind the scenes look into Australia’s up and coming dev scene. This week: We chat with Nic from Sydney-based games developer Nnooo about why all development isn’t just iOS development and why it’s important to carve your own niche.

Developers! Developers! Developers!
It’s not just Steve Ballmer’s favourite sweat-laden catchcry! If you’d like to be featured in Developers Cubed, shoot a note to alex.kidman at alluremedia.com.au. I’d love to hear from you.

Who are you and where do you work?
My name is Nic Watt and I’m the Creative Director (and technically CEO) of Nnooo an indie games company based in Sydney, Australia

Why do we know you? What have you created?
We have created several successful franchises for WiiWare and DSiWare and are now turning our hand to the next generation of consoles with games for Nintendo 3DS and other unannounced consoles. Our most successful projects have been Pop, a launch title for the WiiWare service; Pop + Solo a sequel to Pop for DSiWare and our myLifeCollected series of applications for DSiWare which includes myNotebook, myPostcards and myDiary; finally escapeVektor our latest game was released to critical acclaim at the end of last year on WiiWare.

Our current projects include escapeVektor for Nintendo 3DS (and other platforms – to be announced) and Spirit Hunters Inc an augmented reality RPG for DSiWare and Nintendo 3DS.

Kotaku Australia Show & Tell

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

Kotaku Australia have recently introduced a new feature for Australian developers called Show & Tell. When they asked for developers to submit answers to five questions describing their studio and current projects we couldn’t resist. It gave us a great chance to tell some more people about escapeVektor: Chapter 1 and Spirit Hunters Inc.

Show And Tell: Nnooo

by Tracey Lien

Welcome to Show and Tell, a (relatively) new regular that gives local Australian indie developers the chance to show their latest work, whether its a finished game or a work in progress. Today we’re speaking to an indie studio that is no stranger to the WiiWare, DSi and iOS market. Bruce Thomson from Nnooo gave us a preview of what they’re working on now.

Can you introduce yourself and tell me a little bit about your studio?

We are an independent game development studio based in Sydney, developing downloadable games primarily for Nintendo consoles. Our first game was called Pop, a bubble popping game for up to four players for the Wii. It was one of only six titles picked for Nintendo’s US WiiWare launch in 2008. We subsequently made a single player version of the game, Pop+ Solo, for the Nintendo DSi and iPhone. We’ve also released a series of personal organiser applications for the Nintendo DSi called the myLifeCollected series. The most successful of the applications, the myNotebook series, has sold almost a quarter of a million units.

Plus there’s a great interview with Nic which includes Nic’s game design influences, why we made the myLifeCollected series, a little more insight into escapeVektor and what we think of Nintendo. Digitally Downloaded features Nnooo

Monday, May 9th, 2011

When Matt Sainsbury from Digitally Downloaded came to have a look at escapeVektor: Chapter 1, he also took some time to catch up with Nic. Based in Sydney, Matt knows us reasonably well by now and Nnooo is featured in this month’s edition of the online magazine. Once you’ve finished reading pages 16-19, have a flick through the rest of it. We think it’s well worth a read!

myDiary release date set for the Americas

Monday, January 17th, 2011

PRESS RELEASE: Nnooo announces the launch date of myDiary™ for Nintendo DSiWare™ in the Americas.

myDiary, the latest release in the highly successful myLifeCollected™ range, goes on sale in the Americas on Monday 31 January. myDiary allows users to organize their lives by keeping track of appointments, making daily journal entries and even setting daily alarms. It also features icons to indicate the time, volume and current battery level.

“myDiary is a logical extension to our myLifeCollected range.”, said Nic Watt, Creative Director at Nnooo. “Our vision with this range was to extend the DSi™ from portable games console into a games and multimedia device. The myLifeCollected range, which also includes our range of myNotebooks™ and myPostcards™, gives people the chance to do just that.”

In myDiary, users can tap on a day to write and review notes and add alarms to keep track of important events and birthdays. myDiary can be customized to your personal taste by using the 12 unlockable background and ink colors.  There is also a security function to keep daily notes private.

“We are delighted with the reaction to this line of applications” said Watt. “The release of myDiary in the Americas marks the end of the current myLifeCollected series. Our next projects will bring our focus back to gaming, with Spirit Hunters Inc, a social RPG for the DSi using augmented reality. We are also working on an exciting new game for Nintendo WiiWare™ which we will be announcing soon.”

myDiary will cost 200 points and will be available from Monday 31 January in the Americas. It is already available in Europe, Australia & New Zealand.

NintendoLife review myDiary

Monday, September 20th, 2010

NintendoLife reviewed myDiary and gave it a commendable 8 points out of 10! You can read the full review below or click here to go straight to the NintendoLife site.

Everyone, take note

Nnooo has seen a fair amount of success with DSiWare. Originally starting off with Pop+ Solo, the developer really began to make its mark on the DSi with the myLifeCollected series, a set of applications for the DSi that started with myNotebook. Since then, Nnooo has moved onto other applications such as myPostcards and myNotebook: Carbon, Pearl and Tan. Now we have myDiary, and it comes as a worthy addition to the series. (more…)

Q & A Interview with Nnooo creative director, Nic Watt

UK-born, Nic Watt’s pet project, Nnooo, has found remarkable success from a digital download platform that many dismiss – thanks in large part to Nintendo’s DSiWare platform, Watt has expanded his small team to four, and is now on the hunt for a senior programmer to expand further.

He sat down with us to have a chat around being a start up, the challenges of developing on other platforms (Nnooo also has WiiWare and iPhone games available, and is looking at the PlayStation Network), and makes some predictions for the future. (more…)

myNotebook: Carbon, Pearl, Tan – DSiWare App Review

As a follow-up to the successes of myNotebook, Nnooo made plans to launch 3 new additions to this selection of apps at a higher cost. Vooks interview Nic: making games in Australia, DSi, 3DS and Spirit Hunters Inc.

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Nic was recently interviewed by Josh Moulds from Vooks about making games in Australia, Nintendo’s DSi and 3DS platforms and the upcoming Spirit Hunters Inc.  Read the full interview below or click here for the Vooks link.

Interview with Nnooo’s Nic Watt

We take a moment to chat with the makers of myNotebook about making games in Australia and their upcoming RPG, ‘Spirit Hunters Inc.’ for DSiWare.
Nnooo is a growing development studio based in Sydney who have produced some of the most successful software apps on the DSiWare store. The four-strong team have managed to pump out several versions of their myNotebook apps for DSiWare; the bubble-bursting game Pop for DSiWare and WiiWare; and are looking to build on their game-making chops with their ghost-catching RPG game, Spirit Hunters Inc.

I was lucky to see an early build of Spirit Hunters Inc. earlier this year- a game that utilises the DSi’s camera to enable players to hunt down, fight and collect hidden spirits in the world around them. The project will be Nnooo’s most ambitious game to date and highlights the creative talent we have here at home in Australia. Seeing the potential in Spirit Hunters Inc., as well as the growing library of myLifeCollected software on the DSi, I tracked down Nnooo’s creative director Nic Watt to talk about what it was like to develop games in Australia and asked him to shed some light on Spirit Hunters.
