escapeVektor: Chapter 1 Review

by Stephen Heller

Some of the best games of all time are the simple, yet challenging ones.  Donkey Kong, Pac-Man and Tetris all have simple concepts, yet immense difficulty that challenges the player and keeps them coming back for more. While the puzzle meets retro arcade gaming sector has seen a number of successes in recent years, Nnooo’s escapeVektor: Chapter 1 goes above and beyond all expectations, as it offers an inviting and unforgettable experience.

Nintendo Life review scores 9/10 for escapeVektor: Chapter 1

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

Nintendo Life have written their review of escapeVektor: Chapter 1 and it’s another hugely positive one. With comments like “one of the finest experiences on the entire WiiWare service” and “This game is sharp, challenging, clever, gorgeous, atmospheric, thought-provoking, and, above all else, fun”, we think they quite like it! Have a read and see if you agree with us.

Virtual world, real quality

by Philip J Reed

After the delightful Pop (and its various offshoots), it seemed a bit like Nnooo was taking a break from game development. The studio released several applications through DSiWare, and while they were quite good, gamers might be forgiven for assuming that the company’s future releases would gravitate more toward “useful” than “fun.” Now Nnooo has released escapeVektor: Chapter 1 to remind us all that not only is the team still interested in games, but that it can also to deliver one of the finest experiences on the entire WiiWare service.

escapeVektor: Chapter 1 is brilliant. There are no other words to describe it, though, so that this review isn’t the shortest in Nintendo Life’s history, we’re going to have to try to find some.

What lurks inside your Wii’s CPU? An awesome game, that’s what!

Have you ever wondered what is going on in your Wii’s CPU? No? Well, maybe you will after playing Australian developer Nnooo’s newest WiiWare product escapeVektor Chapter 1: Combat Power Unleashed. In the first episode of this brand new series, we meet Vektor. He has been trapped inside your Wii for longer than he can remember and you are the first person he has successfully made contact with. He doesn’t remember anything of his past or why he is trapped, but if you help him you might learn a thing or two about Vektor. However, this is not as easy as it sounds. The CPU is fully aware of your actions and tries to stop you at any cost. Luckily for you, Vektor has coding skills which can come in handy, but I am getting ahead of myself.

escapeVektor: Chapter 1 – Run, blast and reach for the stars!

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

escapeVektor™: Chapter 1 is a retro styled arcade game for WiiWare™ in which the player controls Vektor, an entity trapped inside the player’s CPU. Each level consists of a series of interconnected lines which form cells. These are claimed as Vektor moves along them. Claiming all of the cells in a level unlocks the exit to the next level, bringing Vektor closer to his escape.

However, this is no ordinary CPU. It has held Vektor captive for what feels like an eternity and it doesn’t want him to leave now. As Vektor progresses with his escape, the CPU sets up obstacles and sends out its army to destroy him.

In the final part of our escapeVektor: Chapter 1 feature, we describe the Interceptors, the most difficult enemy to deal with. We also talk about the Detonate ability, high scoring tactics and the interactive soundtrack. (more…)

Nnooo talks about developing for WiiWare

by Leigh Harris

escapeVektor: Chapter 1 has been given pricing and a release date by developer Nnooo today, who has spoken to MCV about releasing games for WiiWare.

The downloadable Wii title will be available worldwide on 29th September for 500 Nintendo points, and blends Tron style arcade gameplay with intense puzzle action to unique and very colourful effect.

Nic Watt, creative director at Nnooo, told MCV: “WiiWare like all channels for an indie developer is a tough market to compete in. As a small independent developer we have learnt that it is not simply good enough to have a great, highly polished game and expect it to sell well just on word of mouth.”

Nintendo World Report previews escapeVektor: Chapter 1

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

Nintendo World Report interviewed Nic at GDC and filmed his walkthrough of escapeVektor: Chapter 1. We also sent them a preview copy of the game to see what they thought when they played it through themselves. Find out exactly what they thought below and see the detailed walkthough video at the end of the preview.

Let me ‘point’ you in the direction of a new retro-styled WiiWare title.

Nnooo’s latest WiiWare game is a decidedly retro title with inspiration from arcade games like Pac-Man, Tron, and a bit of Every Extend Extra and Rez. In the first in a series of games, players find an entity named Vektor who is trapped inside the Wii’s CPU, and in an abstract way, they must help him escape.

The “CPU” is made up of series of interconnecting rectangles, or “cells,” of various sizes. Using the Wii Remote in NES configuration or the Classic Controller, players control an arrow, which travels along the edges of these cells. All lines must be traversed in order to open a door to escape. The concept is simple, but very engaging.

We take Nnooo’s trippy arcade title for a spin by Corbie Dillard

It’s now been almost three long years since Nnooo released its first WiiWare title Pop, and now after having turned its attention to DSiWare and its rather unique set of myLifeCollected applications, the company has decided to make a surprising return to WiiWare with the brand new title escapeVektor: Chapter 1. While there are no bubbles to pop this time around, Nnooo has taken a very simple concept and wrapped a unique gaming experience around it all. (more…)
